Many states have recently updated their laws to require residents to show their birth certificate in order to renew their driver’s license. If you live in the state of Florida, Oregon, Maryland, Utah, or Indiana, among others, you will now be required to show a certified copy of your birth certificate or other documents in order to renew your driver’s license.


Why do states now require a birth certificate for a driver’s license?
Many states require a birth certificate or other documents to renew a driver’s license in order to comply with the federal REAL ID Act of 2005 in a nationwide effort to improve the integrity and security of State-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards, which in turn will help fight terrorism and reduce fraud. The federal REAL ID Act of 2005 adopted the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission which are designed to make it harder for terrorists, illegal immigrants, and con artists to steal identities or obtain fraudulent IDs.

Renewing your Driver’s License in Florida
In January 2010, the state of Florida began requiring official documents proving your identity, Social Security number and residential address to renew your driver’s license.
